Paragliding competitions consist of flying distances of between 50km and 100km each day for 7 days. The format is like a race or marathon where the winning pilots are those who reach the finish line in the shortest time.
The launch area is designated each day based on the weather conditions.
Pilots who reach the finish line receive points for distance, speed, and lead, while those who do not receive points only for distance. The winner of the day takes home a maximum of 1,000 points. Typically, the flights last between 2 and 4 hours, with approximately 70% of the competitors reaching the finish line.
Paragliders are unpowered, so pilots must find natural updrafts of warm air that rise to form cotton-like clouds called cumulus. Thermal currents can reach altitudes of over 4,000 meters above sea level.
Pilots accumulate points each day, with the champion being the one who has the most points over the 7 days of competition.
